Typical Insurance Claim Process
After an accident, make a claim with your insurance company:
- Select a reputable body shop – such as S & L Autobody - The State of Michigan gives you the right to take your vehicle to a repair shop of your choice
- Determine your insurance deductible from your agent
- Determine if car rental is included on your policy and if so how much per day
- Receive the insurance claim number
Have the vehicle inspected so an initial estimate can be written by:
- S & L Autobody (no appointment necessary) or
- The insurance adjustor. You will need to schedule an appointment to meet the adjustor:
- At S & L Autobody or
- At Your home or office or
- At an insurance facility
The initial estimate is then submitted by S & L Autobody or the adjustor to the insurance company for review and approval.
The insurance company determines what repair parts (if needed) are to be used on your vehicle depending on your policy:
- New – Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)
- Aftermarket – New but made by someone other than the OEM
- Reconditioned – Used but refurbished to look like new
- Used
The insurance company approves the initial estimate by:
- Emailing/faxing a copy back to S & L Autobody or
- Giving a printed copy directly to You and/or S & L Autobody

- Parts and/or labor are not written on the initial estimate
All changes are submitted by S & L Autobody to be reviewed by the insurance company for final approval and payment.
